Air-Breathing Membraneless Laminar Flow-Based Fuel Cell with Flow- Through Anode

چکیده
This paper describes a detailed characterization of laminar flow-based fuel cell (LFFC) with air-breathing cathode for performance (fuel utilization and power density). The effect of flow-over and flow-through anode architectures, as well as operating conditions such as different fuel flow rates and concentrations on the performance of LFFCs was investigated. Formic acid with concentrations of 0.5 M and 1 M in a 0.5 M sulfuric acid solution as supporting electrolyte were exploited with varying flow rates of 20, 50, 100 and 200 μl/min. Because of the improved mass transport to catalytic active sites, the flow-through anode showed improved maximum power density and fuel utilization per single pass compared to flow-over planar anode. Running on 200 μl/min of 1 M formic acid, maximum power densities of 26.5 mW/cm and 19.4 mW/cm were obtained for the cells with flow-through and flow-over anodes, respectively. In addition, chronoamperometry experiment at flow rate of 100 μl/min with fuel concentrations of 0.5 M and 1 M revealed average current densities of 34.2 mA/cm and 52.3 mA/cm with average fuel utilization of 16.3 % and 21.4 % respectively for flow-through design. The flow-over design had the corresponding values of 25.1 mA/cm and 35.5 mA/cm with fuel utilization of 11.1% and 15.7% for the same fuel concentrations and flow rate.

Membraneless vanadium redox fuel cell using laminar flow.
This paper describes the design and characterization of a small, membraneless redox fuel cell. The smallest channel dimensions of the cell were 2 mm x 50 mum or x 200 mum; the cell was fabricated in poly(dimethylsiloxane) using soft lithography. This all-vanadium fuel cell took advantage of laminar flow to obviate the need for a membrane to separate the solutions of oxidizing and reducing compo...

The purpose of present study is to investigate the dynamic response of two conventional types of solid oxide fuel cells to the inlet air mass flow rate variation. A dynamic compartmental model based on CFD principles is developed for two typical planar and tubular SOFC designs. The model accounts for transport processes (heat and mass transfer), diffusion processes, electrochemical processes, a...

One of the key goals of enzymatic biofuel cells research has been the development of a fully enzymatic biofuel cell that operates under a continuous flow-through regime. Here, we present our work on achieving this task. Two NAD(+)-dependent dehydrogenase enzymes; malate dehydrogenase (MDH) and alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) were independently coupled with poly-methylene green (poly-MG) catalyst fo...
متن کاملA dual-mode rechargeable lithium-bromine/oxygen fuel cell
In order to meet the versatile power requirements of the autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV), we propose a rechargeable lithium-bromine/seawater fuel cell with a protected lithium metal anode to provide high specific energy at either low-power mode with seawater (oxygen) or high-power mode with bromine catholytes. The proof-of-concept fuel cell with a flat catalyst-free graphite electrode can ...
متن کاملA membraneless air-breathing hydrogen biofuel cell based on direct wiring of thermostable enzymes on carbon nanotube electrodes.
A biocathode was designed by the modification of a carbon nanotube (CNT) gas-diffusion electrode with bilirubin oxidase from Bacillus pumilus, achieving high current densities up to 3 mA cm(-2) for the reduction of O2 from air. A membraneless air-breathing hydrogen biofuel cell was designed by combination of this cathode with a functionalized CNT-based hydrogenase anode.
